he minute repeater is one of the great watchmaking efforts in the history of Patek Philippe, and it has adorned the most classically-styled models since time immemorial. Which is why the latest minute repeater is breaking all the rules that Patek Phillippe set for itself. The Reference 7047G Minute Repeater wraps Patek Philippe’s expertise in Grand Complications around a contemporary, thoroughly modern design. Compared to the Calatrava, this latest and greatest complication looks like it was dropped from the future.
The most striking aspect of this contemporary Minute Repeater is its vivid blue and orange color scheme, with different shades of navy blue converging on the 18 ct gold plate. Orange accent marks populate the triangular markers around the center-seconds register as well as the center dial, whose assertive checkerboard inner dial pattern is meant to suggest carbon fiber. Anathema to Patek tradition? It’s certainly a departure from sapphire galaxies or gold-engraved filigree, both of which adorn the other watches that Patek Philippe introduced at this year’s Watches & Wonders. Bold white-gold Arabic numbers above a satin finish are filled with white Superluminova, and the minute markers above those are lined in orange. The overall package suggests the bright, eye-grabbing appeal of a sports jersey.
Patek Philippe’s Calibre R 27 PS, an automatic micro-rotor movement composed of 39 jewels and 327 components, imbues the Minute Repeater with its mechanical voice. From its clear sapphire caseback, the elaborate minute repeater chimes on its twin gongs, situated to the right of the Calatrava Cross, rendered in gold with a ruby jewel in its center. At just 5.05mm thick, its allure goes beyond its intricate finishing (such as on its 22 ct diamond-engraved micro-rotor) to reflecting Patek Philippe’s decades-long experience in miniaturizing Grand Complications.
The 38mm case is constructed from polished white gold, and it’s paired with a navy blue fabric-patterned composite strap, complete with contrasting orange stitching and lining, and secured by a prong-style buckle in white gold.
This new Minute Repeater may seem as far removed from the aesthetic of past repeaters as a Grand Sonniere from a Hublot. (No value judgement there: different horses, and all that.) Yet, the execution is still as meticulous as ever: with its textured dial that exhibits complex depth, a beautifully polished white gold case, and that legendary chiming movement. For those who want to hear, see, and be convinced by the chime, pricing for the 7047G Minute Repeater is $572,087 USD. For more information, please see the Patek Philippe website.
